What Is an ATS-Friendly Resume? How to Beat Applicant Tracking Systems

Updated 20 October 2026 · 7 min read

An applicant tracking system (ATS) is software employers use to collect, parse and search job applications. Popular systems include Workday, Taleo, iCIMS, Greenhouse, Lever and SuccessFactors. When you apply online, the ATS extracts your details into fields — name, contact, job titles, dates, skills — and recruiters then search and filter candidates.

Does an ATS “reject” resumes?

Usually not automatically. The real risk is subtler: if the system cannot read your resume properly, your job titles or skills may be missing from your profile, so you do not show up when a recruiter searches for “Registered Nurse” or “Python”. An ATS-friendly resume makes sure everything you wrote is captured.

What makes a resume ATS-friendly

  • Real, selectable text — never a scanned image or text inside graphics.
  • A single-column layout for strict portals; tables and text boxes can scramble reading order.
  • Standard section headings: Experience, Education, Skills, Certifications.
  • Dates in a consistent format such as “Jan 2022 — Present”.
  • Contact details in the body of the page, not in headers or footers.
  • Common fonts and no decorative symbols in place of words.
  • Keywords that match the job description, used naturally.

Keywords: the part most people miss

Recruiters search the ATS using terms from the job ad. Read the posting, note the skills, tools, certifications and job titles it repeats, and make sure those that genuinely apply to you appear in your summary, skills and bullets. Do not stuff keywords or hide white text — modern systems and recruiters spot it, and it destroys trust.

Are two-column and photo resumes bad?

Many modern ATS read two-column layouts correctly, but some older ones read straight across the page and mix your columns. If you are applying through an online portal, a single-column, photo-free template is the safe choice. Two-column and photo designs are perfect to email directly, hand over at interviews, or use in regions where photos are expected.

Check before you apply

Our editor scores your resume live across contact details, structure, content, parseability and keywords — and if you paste the job description it shows which keywords are matched and which are missing. Aim for 85 or more before applying online.
